Responsive Web Design is one of the most widely discussed topics in web design today. It refers to a website whose layout fluidly adapts to the viewable area of the device or browser. Responsive web design flips traditional development on its head. Rather than assuming that complex websites should lose functionality when viewed on smaller devices, it adopts a mobile first development approach. What does this mean for you? At Pikselin, we start with a design that works great on mobile devices and work to build up tablet and desktop designs from there. Your website will look and work great on phones as well as traditional computers.
Of course the mobile web is only one part of the story. Many people consider having a smartphone app to be more valuable than a website. And we can help. Our team has had plenty of experience designing and creating award winning mobile apps for iOS, Android and even Windows.
With a design that readily adapts to a huge range of devices and form factors, we’ve made it easy for Ngati Porou to keep their visitors up to date while they are on the the go. Built around a simple navigation system, the website uses beautiful photographs and typographic call-outs to encourage visitors to explore the stories of this East Coast iwi.
Over 80% of New Zealand teens use a smartphone to connect to the web. So of course the new Lincoln University website is modern and mobile responsive. But teens aren’t the University’s only audience. Lincoln’s website caters to dozens of different types of users. From researchers to alumni to school leavers to parents, each group’s needs were carefully considered during our design process.
Since 2012 Pikselin has been responsible for the design and user experience of all of MetService’s iPhone, Android and Windows Store apps. Each app that we have designed offers a unique experience. From the customisable wallpapers of Towns and Cities to the fluid interface of Snow Weather, each app has been designed to make a lasting impression on the user. The MetService family of apps has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times. All of the apps have ranked at the top of their respective categories in both Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store.
You don’t have to be a giant company to need a great mobile website. Earlier this year, Google made changes to their search listings to favour sites that work well on mobile devices. This means that sites without a mobile solution may appear lower in search rankings. Besides looking great, our new design for Museums Wellington is classic example of responsive web design at work. Bold blocks of colour and strong typography help to create a modern look that unifies four very different attractions into one family. With this new design in place, Museums Wellington know that people will still be able to find Space Place, Wellington Museum and their other locations in Google before visiting them here in Wellington, New Zealand.
